Q: What
paperwork is required for M60 Foreign Military purchases?
A: In order to sell an M60 Series machine gun to a foreign government
we need to submit the following documentation to the Department of Defense
Trade Controls for their review and approval. Items subject to change.
Consult the current ITAR (INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC IN ARMS REGULATIONS)
for the most up to date information.
1. Import Certificate
2. DSP-5
3. DSP-83
4. Product Brochures
5. Freight Forwarder List
6. Purchase order and Contract
Q: What is the difference between
an M60E4 and the Mk43
A: Nothing M60E4 and the Mk43 are the same weapon system. Mk43
is the Navy nomenclature.
Q: How does the M60E4 differ
from the standard M60
A: The M60E4/Mk43 represents significant improvements over the
standard M60. Besides significant weight saving there are over 12 major
reliability improvements on the M60E4/Mk43. Click here for a complete
list of improvements.
Q: Why doesn't the M60 Series
Machine Gun have a selective fire option?
A: The lower cyclic rate of the M60E4/Mk43 allows for effective
single and three round burst fire eliminating the need for selective
fire.
Q: Would the M60 Machine gun
be more effective if the cyclic rate of fire was higher?
A: The M60E4 500-650 round rate of fire is considered leathal
at the "beaten zone" but allows for the conservation of ammunition.
Cyclic rates of fire above 650 rounds per minute cause undue wear on
the weapon system.
Q: M60 effective range is listed
as 1100 meters but a 7.62mm range is 3735 meters. Why the difference?
A: Barrowing from military experience within the NATO arena MMG's
are primarily employed from their integral bipod mount, i.e. as a light
support weapon, and firing techniques are effective out to 800 meters.
The 800 meters of "effective range", when an MMG is used as
a light support weapon is a good method of evaluation, as 800 meters
is about the maximum range a 7.62 ball round will penetrate an M1, U.S.,
steel helmet. Helmet penetration is a common aspect of determining effective
maximum effective range. For U.S. 7.62mm NATO ammunition the maximum
range of ball projectiles is 3,725 meters. However at this range, the
projectile is not considered lethal by military definition.
Q: Is the M60 still in service
A: Yes, it is used by the US Army, US Airforce, US Navy, US Navy
Seals, US Coast Guard, and foreign militaries worldwide.
Q: What type of Ammunition
does the M60 Series of machine guns fire?
A: 7.62 x 51 mm NATO ammunition
M61: Armour Piercing used against lightly armored targets.
M62: Tracer used for observation of fire, incendiary effects, signaling,
and training.
M80: Full Metal Jacket Ball Against light materiel targets and personnel,
and for range training.
M82: Blanks used During training when simulated live fire is desired
(A blank firing attachment must be used to fire this ammunition).
M63: Dummy round used during mechanical training.
